07.17.2007 :: Avocado cam, July 17th edition

On April 21st, I cut open some ripe avocados and set the seeds in water.
Today, July 17th this is what I see:
Avocado plant
That, knitters, is an AVOCADO PLANT! I'm over the moon!
And then there is this one:
another avocado plant!
2 sprouts! 2 plants (so far, it looks as if the other 2 will sprout too). If you recall, my local newspaper plant expert columnist advised me to have lots of patience. She wasn't kidding!
What do you think my loving husband said to me as I proudly held up the PLANT to show him?
"Yeah, but it won't BE anything, right?" (meaning that it will not grow avocados. He can't get over the fact that I would purposely grow an avocado plant that will not grow avocados.)
Obviously, he does not understand the Mountain mentality.
The hiker climbs a mountain because it is THERE.
I grow avocado plants because I CAN.
Simple, right?
:)

Oh, also, it takes at least 3-4 years for them to start producing fruit. So you've got lots of runway there.

As the owner of 2 avocado trees, let me warn you that some trees are male and actually don't produce fruit. Both mine are female, but there is a male around somewhere.... ;)

Holy moley, they took their sweet time, didn't they?!

And why wouldn't your avocado tree produce avocados? If you put it in a big enough pot and fertilized it with the right stuff and kept the temperature just so... er... okay, I get it.

Yay for the avocados! I should show you Rilena. Talk about p-a-t-i-e-n-c-e. Cripes. She's out on the porch for a summer vacation, but she's still NOT BLOOMIN' for cripes' sake.

Your thumbs are very green! And with your forest of avocado trees, maybe a miracle will happen ~ "Sometimes they will begin setting fruit after they are three or four years old. It helps to have several avocado trees growing together to aid with pollination."

Makes perfect sense to me!

Go Sandy go! A long, patient cheer.

I really admire your ability to grow things, Sandy. I can't grow anything - not for lack of trying!! Can you aim some good thoughts at the strawberries and potatoes we planted on the weekend? ;)

Hoorah! The books arrived today! A million thanks, Sandy! I thought the Post Office had lost them - there are multiple streets in my town with the same name as my street/mail is a nightmare although the bills always find me! lol I will greatly enjoy both books - haven't read either of them! Thanks again! Kate/Mass

Couldn't find your email addy - is there one listed on your blog?

Plus, they're freakin' gorgeous. Congrats to you -- on the green thumb and having the required patience.

They won't ever grow avocados? Oh, man.

Yay!

I knew they would do it. :D

I've been wondering how the avocados were doing! I'm glad to have some kind of timeline idea, since my daughter and I set one to sprouting about 3 weeks ago.
