07.23.2007 :: Charging my batteries

I am now on vacation for one week. A vacation at home. There is no going away for us this year, which is fine seeing as we are about to embark on some hefty home repairs within the next couple of weeks. My week will be related to the repairs as things have to be done before our sad porch gets ripped down and rebuilt. I really need to find a way to recharge myself in the next week also. I'm feeling a bit depleted, exhausted and a bit grumpy and stressed out lately. Not acceptable. But I do believe that I am on the right track for a cure.
A little of this:
2 Harry Potters
It was a great weekend of being planted on the couch, reading together with Bethany. My kind of fun. Hey, we live crazy lives, what can I say? Bethany is done hers (she got it at Midnight Friday, I got mine in the mail on Saturday, but that is not why she is done way before me) and I am about 300 pages in. In all fairness, this isn't a competition. Unless you are Bethany and you are now done the book and her mother is not. Then it definitely IS a competition. My eyes are a lot older than hers and get achy if put under so much strain for too many hours in a row. And frankly? Nighttime reading is pretty much a stretch for me lately. So, youth has the advantage. Plus, I want to savor it (she says like that excuses all of the eye complaints) I DO! Want to savor it! But I also don't want a headache from reading too much. I'm complicated. What can I say?
AND.
A little of that:
Mountain Stream Scarf
Some knitting. And I choose lace knitting? Seems like someone might have put a magical spell over me, huh? Lace knitting is not easy for me. It is a challenge. It's also very unrewarding as you gaze at your knitting to the lump of stitches that is supposedly a wonderful pattern. I've got to hand it to all of you lace knitters. You've got it going on. I don't. Simple as that. But mittens are calling me all of a sudden. How I love mittens. I know that there will be some mitten knitting this week. That is rejuvenating to me.
I also have to fix this:
Estonian Pocket bag
The estonian Pocket bag is almost finished. But that fringe edging is almost doing me in. Stitches keep dropping and tangling the fringe. Not good in the fringe world. My plan is to rip it out (again) and try it on a circular needle. Please send good fringey thoughts. This is a project that deserves to be done and not occupying space on the bottom of a basket. Don't you think?
~~~
Here's some random thoughts rattling around:
~it has been such a wonderful summer here, not too hot, not very humid and I'm expecting the ball to drop any time on that one. How can we have a total wonderful summer? Not going to happen, will it? Could it? pretty please.
~since when did reading become such a hazardous activity? My head hurts, eyes ache, neck is stiff, hip hurts. This aging process SUCKS!
~There are 2 little dogs across the street, cute if you don't know them at all, who are going to drive me BANANAS. They go outside and then get ignored for hours and they proceed to bark. Not just any bark. Barking I can handle. Their collective bark is equivalent to many fingernails running down a chalkboard. The pitch of their bark actually hurts the inner ear. I have lately heard the neighbors yelling out of their windows "Stop barking!" Poor little dogs, being left out and ignored for hours like that. What are people thinking when they get dogs that they don't really have time for? Hmmm?
~What's for dinner? I am looking forward to a wonderful farm stand salad with french feta cheese (which is a bit creamier than the greek version) and perhaps some grilled chicken.
Well, I'd better get on with the day. Rejuvenating does not happen by itself you know!
When was your last eye exam? Maybe those headaches are nature's way of saying you need a new prescription.
Have you ever seen "Keeping Mum"? There is a running joke there about dealing with a neighbor's annoyiing barking dog. The solution is a little extreme but that's part of the fun of the movie.
My HP7 won't be here until Friday (library copy). I was #4 on the list of 400+ requesters. So far I haven't hit any real spoilers, although I do know the ending is a satisfying one.
So did you like the book? Was it satisfying? I have some lingering issues/questions that I hope JKR will address in interviews... won't say anything else here to protect the innocent. ;-)
Home improvement is so stressful--I feel lucky that our big summer project isn't as awful as I had feared, but it's still tedious and messy. Good luck with your porch... focus on the good things, like getting to relax with your knitting on a brand-new porch once it's all done. :-)
Dear Sandy, I just blocked a shawl I really didn't like while I was knitting it, and now I'm in love and want to make another of the same pattern, Lace Knitting really is a leap of faith. And if your eyes are bothering you as you describe get to the eye doctor! If you don't already have reading glasses or a current prescription it will make so much difference. I just got mine changed and read HP in one stretch on Saturday and I'm 51. Hang in there and enjoy your week.
Sounds like a great start to a great week! I'm rushing to finish the book I'm reading currently so I can delve into my Harry Potter. Hopefully the ending won't be spoiled before I get to it.
Can't wait to see how your lace shapes up. The color is beautiful.
Enjoy the rest of your week:)
*good fringey thoughts good fringey thoughts* Did that help? I'm still waiting for summer in my neck of the woods. Sad but true.....
What a fun and chatty post. I did not know that French feta was creamier than Greek. In fact, I did not know there EXISTED French feta. See? You taught me something.
Lace knitting sucks. :)
Jon and I were a little nervous when we moved into our new apartment, looked out the window and saw six (!) Jack Russell terriers in the neighbor's backyard. We
were pleasantly surprised to learn how quiet they are (and fun to watch playing in the yard). I feel so bad for the dogs in your neighborhood, getting animal control involved might be the best thing that happens to them.
I always get discouraged knitting lace. I may give it another chance sometime.
Sending man good fringey and rejuvenating thoughts your way.
We're having the coldest winter in 20 years or something here, I want to hibernate! Hope your weather stays good though.
I'm starting to think I have your humidity. How do I send it back? :?
I agree with Manise. This is one of the reasons we pay taxes.
What's dinner? I've no idea. I'm sitting here wondering about lunch. If I was closer, I'd be coming to you, tho.
*hugs*
I was just thinking the same thing about the weather -- enough rain so I don't have to worry about the lawn, not that I really do anyway, not too hot... what fun is living in New England if you can't complain about the weather? Oh well, there's always winter.
There's much to be said for vacationing at home. As for lace knitting, it's all about delayed gratification and waiting for the metamorphosis at the end. Pupa into butterfly, duck into swan, dishrag into shawl!
Knock wood, we haven't had too hot of a summer yet either. As a matter of fact, the past few days have been just about perfect- mid-80s, low humidity. It was actually in the 50s this morning! Unheard of for July in NC. Love it. :)
Your lace looks beautiful. I just take it one stitch at a time. You can do it!
I'm trying so hard to savor HP. But I'm at the point where it's nearly impossible to put it down.
It has been a pretty tame summer, hasn't it? Remember last summer - or was it the summer before? - when all we talked about was the dreaded dew point?
These days I read one page and I'm sound asleep! Savor indeed!
In terms of the dogs- that's what your dog officer is paid for- handling noise complaints is included. The neighbors will be given x number of warnings and then they'll get fined. If it's hot out you can probably call saying that you're concerned for their welfare and don't see water put out for them. Every town has their own rules. The neighbor also doesn't need to know who complained either- that way you don't have to deal with the neighbor directly. If all the neighbors call and complain more will be done sooner than later. Just saying- been there and done that repeatedly and now the barking has pretty much stopped.
Love your estonian bag- I can see where the fringe is driving you batty.
Hang in there.
We had perfect summer in 2004...never reach 100 and every night was delightful for sleeping. This summer is pure hell...too hot day and night. May your summer stay perfect, but remember, you'll pay later.
When you figure out what rejuvenated you please let me know. I'm in need of some myself.
Hugs to you, grrlfriend!
