07.29.2007 :: Avocado cam, the day we have been waiting for!

A story in pictures! (click any photo to be whisked to my FLICKR account)
~~
Today is the day:
Today is the day for this little avocado seed to become a potted plant!
Wonderful pot made by the New England Pottery Co.
Look at the wonderful leaves the plant has grown!
Look at the wonderful leaves growing!
BUT...
But...
It must be trimmed. I am under strict instructions to not get soft with it. To have a nice, bushy plant, I must trim. No one wants a straggly plant! It hurts to trim, but trim I must!
Snip, snip
GAH! Such fine looking leaves they were too!
Time for a feed and a water!
Water and feed
No junk food for this avocado plant! My favorite plant food and my trusty watering can.
Little twig, I'd like you to meet your future:
Avocado plant meets avocado
Everyone has to have goals!
Finished!
Finis
Avocado to pot: April 21st-July 29Th~! 3 months and a week!
Sure, it's a bit sparse. But it's not the first time I have planted a twig and most likely won't be the last!
(3 more avocado seeds to go!)
Anybody craving guacamole??

Two comments: 1)I, too, have an avocado at the same stage of growth. Great inspiration for me to go on and get it done!2)Through a google search, I read a 2004 entry here that mentioned a substitute for Richesse de Soie. Are you still sold on Prime Alpaca as a substitute? I'd like to do the Bejewelled Cat's Paw shrug from A Gathering of Lace, and am searching for a good replacement. Have you ever used KnitPick's Gloss? Margie

Looking at that cutting process gives me the same feeling I get when cutting a steek!

Hey, nice avocado! I never got past the sprouting stage either. I can't wait to see what yours does!
Thanks for the b-day wishes! Very sweet of you!

Howdja sprout the seed in the first place? Did you immerse it, or was it just the bottom of the seed that was in water (I noticed the toothpicks, but wasn't sure if that was a second stage of the sprouting process).

We grow orange trees around here. Also lemon trees. On my apartment balcony. Because we can. And because Spiff thinks they'll all die and he is WRONG.

I cut it all the time, so why can't my hair grow out bushier?

Ouch, that almost hurt just seeing the pictures. I never thought of trimming mine down. I was so happy just to see the leaves grow.

Oh my goodness! SNIP. Just like THAT? You be sure to show us at the first sign of new growth!! I know you'll be watching!

*sniff, sniff* Growing up so fast. Where did the time go?

Hey! I almost bought the same cobalt blue pot in the North End last week. (I needed 9, and that would have been too expensive.) And my heart did stop when I saw you attack the plant with the scissors. Fingers crossed that it survives all the torture. You are one brave woman. Guess you're just gearing up for all the construction heading your way.

I don't think I am ever NOT craving the gaucamole.

Excellent progress on the avocado plant!

I love guacamole! Gosh the snipping does seem harsh but if it has to be, then it has to.

Best wishes on the house - work.

Wow. Such patience. I've been watching this and it is amazing to me that it is actually growing. Thanks for the wee look into your avocado's life. :-)

Avocado TV.

I did NOT know that about the trimming -- at least not THAT harsh way!!!! But if Manise says so, it must be true.

Grow little twig, grow!!! XO

Go, grow, little twig! That's the spirit! :-)

And... yes! I HAVE been dreaming of mittens, now that you mention it! And this is the best time to knit them, don't you think? (Before they are actually needed, I mean.)

I'll bring the salsa and the chips - you bring the guac!

Posted by: Carole on 07.29.2007 AT 05:32 PM

Yay!! I've been waiting for this day. That is indeed a lovely pot - I believe the quality of the pot reflects one's feelings about the plant's prospects, and that avocado plant should be feeling pretty good about itself right now!

Posted by: Catherine on 07.29.2007 AT 05:26 PM

It almost seems like a cruel thing to do, but it will make for a bushier and healthier plant. Nice job!
