09.08.2007 :: The day that a tree fell on my car!

This morning, around 9:10, I heard unusual sounds that went on and on. They were loud sounds. Popping and snapping kind of sounds. Unlike any I have heard before.
The sounds? Were the sounds of a tree cracking and falling.
ON MY CAR!!!
Kind of like a WHERE'S WALDO picture
Where's Waldo type of "Where's my car?". My first thought (while all the cracking and popping was still going on) was to move the car out of harms way. So I grabbed the key and ran outside. And realized it was not something that was reasonable. The tree was still moving and too much was sitting on the car. So, I did what any sane and reasonable, capable woman would do! I stood on my new porch and cried "OH MY GOD OH MY GOD OH MY GOD" over and over.
I mean, what would you do?
But the scariest part? I mean besides a car that may be potentially crushed? Is this:
The worst part?
It was laying on MY NEW PORCH!!! NOOOOOOOOOO!
But this tree story does have a happy ending, as long as you are not the tree. My car? Scratches and a small dent. Fixable. Totally. The porch? Just had branches sitting on it. It could have been worse. No one was hurt.
The tree:
Cracked tree limb
And that is all a good thing. Now? I must await the tree surgeons.

Wow, Sandy, I'm so glad nothing is very damaged (especially the new porch!!!!) Love the kitty photo on the porch, by the way.

Oh goodness! I'm so glad there was no major damage except to the poor tree. And at least you didn't get in the car and have it smashed!

I can't see the photos on your blog when I'm at work, so I had to wait until I got home to see the damage, as minor as it was. I'm glad it wasn't worse, but, honestly, couldn't this have happened pre-new porch, when you still had that old station wagon?

And it wasn't the weight of the stash that you were hiding up in that tree that made it fall, was it? ;-)

Posted by: Susan on 09.10.2007 AT 08:05 PM

Oh my I actually gasped when I scrolled down to the picture of the tree and the porch!!!
That popping cracking sound is one I know all too well!!!!
You don't have a fireplace do you?? hehhe

Posted by: Denise on 09.10.2007 AT 04:54 PM

Holy crap lady! I'm glad you, the car, and the porch are all fine :)

Posted by: Amber on 09.10.2007 AT 04:20 PM

Oh no! But I'm glad no one was hurt and no expensive items were squished.

Posted by: Lucia on 09.10.2007 AT 03:51 PM

Oh yes, you did exactly what any sane person would do! I'm so glad no one was hurt and the damage wasn't terrible.

Posted by: Julie on 09.10.2007 AT 03:39 PM

Hahaha, I know that OH-MY-GOD thing! I'm glad there was no serious damage.
; )

Posted by: Vicki on 09.10.2007 AT 03:06 PM

SOOO glad no one was hurt!! How scary!!! I can't believe your car even survived!!!!

Posted by: Crazy For Yarn In Alabama on 09.10.2007 AT 03:05 PM

OMGosh, sooo glad you, and your car, and your porch are ok. The tree? I work for a tree care service, I'm bettin' they are gonna tell you it has to go.

Posted by: Tracey on 09.10.2007 AT 03:04 PM

Holy crap!!! Glad everyone and everything is okay...holy crap!

Posted by: JessaLu on 09.10.2007 AT 11:49 AM

OMG, that's scary! Glad that your car and new porch weren't crushed by the tree!!

Posted by: chris on 09.10.2007 AT 09:09 AM

OH MY GOD!! The new car?? The new porch?? Thank goodness no one was hurt. Wow, Sandy--never a dull moment over there, eh?

Love you, girlie! xoxo

Posted by: Kim on 09.09.2007 AT 10:47 PM

Oh no! Thank god your porch was safe, you were safe and the car is pretty much ok!

Posted by: margene on 09.09.2007 AT 03:56 PM

Thank goodness no one was hurt! How's Fig? Does he think this is just more of the evil plot to mess with his little kitty brains? How are you this morning?

Posted by: Cookie on 09.09.2007 AT 01:12 PM

I can't think of anything to say. I'm just aghast ... and speechless. That's a first!

Posted by: norma on 09.09.2007 AT 12:22 PM

OMG!!!!! Yes I agree, that is the only thing to do when a huge tree is falling on your car and NEW DECK!! I'm SO glad that it was all superficial and that its ok now.
Now time to take a deep breath!!!

Posted by: Lynn on 09.09.2007 AT 10:59 AM

I'm glad no one was hurt - that is too scary. I'm always worried about trees falling on us, the house, the cars and my DH is always telling me it won't happen!

Posted by: chris on 09.09.2007 AT 08:52 AM

Poor you! I had this happen a couple of years ago, but somehow I lucked out and, while the tree completely smashed the windshield, it didn't damage the rest of the car.

I started parking on the treeless side of the driveway after that!!!

Posted by: liz on 09.09.2007 AT 06:41 AM

You must be living right. Giant tree branch falls on car and brand new porch but doesn't seriously hurt either one.

Posted by: Sydney on 09.09.2007 AT 12:08 AM

Man, oh Man! Not the best way to start a day. I breathed easy when you let us know that the porch was okay. Whew!

Posted by: Teresa C on 09.08.2007 AT 10:45 PM

eeeeek!!!

I was up at 3A night before last (no sleeping through the night for me at moment) and heard EXACTLY that sound out front. I looked for the source, but never found it, not even the next morning ... I'm wondering if a branch fell and got caught in the tree.

Your experience was much more exciting.

Posted by: Ruth on 09.08.2007 AT 10:42 PM

That is some crazy tree mojo going on up there. Car safe! Porch safe! Whew.

Posted by: claudia on 09.08.2007 AT 08:51 PM

I'm glad the damage wasn't too bad, and that no-one was hurt. We used to have a gigantic gum tree in the back yard that creaked in every little breeze. I was so glad the day it got chopped down!

Posted by: Donna on 09.08.2007 AT 08:27 PM

Oh my goodness. Well that would have totally freaked me out - good to see that the car and the porch survived.

There is nothing worse than that cracking sound of the tree breaking. It sends shivers down my spine just thinking about it.

Posted by: michelle on 09.08.2007 AT 07:47 PM

Oh my gosh! I'm so glad you all were not hurt and that your car and porch made it out ok.

Posted by: Kelly on 09.08.2007 AT 07:27 PM

WHAT did you do to the tree gods?

Posted by: Jenn on 09.08.2007 AT 07:16 PM

Oh my gosh - that's so scary! I'm glad your car and your beautiful new porch are ok.

After experiencing the big ice storm in 1998 and Hurricane Juan in 2003, I'll never forget the sounds that trees make when they fall... and the sick feeling in your stomach as you wonder just where they're falling.

Posted by: Steph VW on 09.08.2007 AT 06:57 PM

I can just imagine the fright you had seeing a tree on your car and porch roof. What a great relief it must have been to find out things weren't quite as bad as they looked. So glad no one was hurt!

Posted by: Mary on 09.08.2007 AT 06:35 PM

The tree that ate Sandy's car. And porch! How weird...in this relatively calm weather. Luckily, no major damage and no injuries. Whew!

Posted by: Mary Beth on 09.08.2007 AT 05:55 PM

Thank goodness no one was hurt and that the damage wasn't too bad. How scary!

Posted by: Janice on 09.08.2007 AT 05:34 PM

Eeep! Glad your car and porch are (mostly) okay!

Posted by: Andrea (noricum) on 09.08.2007 AT 05:11 PM

Oh no! I'm glad that you all escaped safely!

Posted by: Danielle on 09.08.2007 AT 04:32 PM

I hope a good tree surgeon has opened a branch in your neighborhood!

Posted by: Marcia on 09.08.2007 AT 04:03 PM

So glad the damage wasn't worse. We had a similar experience recently when a huge oak limb just...fell. Onto our front yard. Just missed the house. The arborist who came told us that the tree was healthy but that limb had developed a rotten spot, not visible from the outside, so it was just a random thing. Scary!!!
Of course, we did have another (dead) limb that fell and crushed the roof of our van a few years ago.
p.s. glad you weren't in the car!

Posted by: Katy on 09.08.2007 AT 03:33 PM

Oh no! But yes, it's one of those good luck/bad luck things . . . you had bad luck but in the luckiest possible way . . . So glad nobody (except the tree) was hurt!

Posted by: --Deb on 09.08.2007 AT 03:09 PM

What in the world caused the tree to just split and fall?

Posted by: Annie on 09.08.2007 AT 02:44 PM

Oh no! Not your beloved car! I'm so glad everyone is safe and nothing worse happened.

Posted by: Carole on 09.08.2007 AT 02:04 PM

Go play the lottery! Today's your lucky day! (Glad it wasn't worse!)

Posted by: Cara on 09.08.2007 AT 01:14 PM

Oooohhhh Nooooo!! I am so glad the damages are minimal! You deserve to have the rest of the day to knit on those gorgeous mittens.
