01.15.2008 :: 15. I haiku, do you?
How I love the haiku. Do you? I'm not very good at it, but I sure have fun doing it.
For instance:
Dinnertime Looming,
Ravioli in freezer
More time for knitting ~me
Wouldn't win an award but it's fun and topic specific.
Paula penned a haiku yesterday about my snow! A haiku for me! I was touched (not in THAT Way, stop it!)
needles sprout knitting
the outside world vanishes
seed stitch in winter ~Paula
Now, THAT is beautiful haiku! Tears sprung to my eyes when I read it. Okay, that may be a bit sad, but it's true. Beautiful words touch me.
In my small amount of haiku research, I found this (perhaps a haiku wannabe since it does not exactly meet the specifications, but I like it anyway. I always like the one who takes a chance!)
Snow in my shoe
Abandoned
Sparrow's nest~Jack Kerouac
Not a haiku at all in the traditional sense but it is beautiful.
And how about?
I mean, we're looking
Down on Wayne's basement, only
That's not Wayne's basement~Garth of Wayne's World
Or: (From Nickelodeon)
Boogers in my nose
Chickens dancing in my room
I can see your butt
That one is classic.
Don't you agree?
There is the Random Haiku generators. Here is one created there.
I'm not sure I like those random haikus at all. But art is not for everyone.
A haiku a day is what you will get at Tiny Words. This is great. Todays haiku?
standing near my wife
watching the snowflakes melt
in a stranger's hair—Alan McCarthy
Great one, Alan McCarthy. I love it!
Are you ready to haiku?
What have you got to lose? WARNING: Haikuing can be habit forming.
Go ahead. Haiku here. Haiku there. Leave me a haiku. Put one on your blog. Spread the haiku. What have we got to lose?

Here is my extended haiku composed in honor of the pineapple flavored lifesaver from February 2005 when I was bored at work:
Oh sweet temptation,
from memories of childhood,
your taste stays with me.
Hint of the tropics,
where are my jelly sandals?
only two per roll.
Sugary goodness,
you bring back black-eyed susans,
and hot August days.
Once thought digusting,
You were my least favorite,
Now, I must have more.
Oh, sweet Lifesaver,
there are not enough of you,
and I have to work.

I'm sorry, but who can top Norma's t-shirt haiku, I love it.

Oh, I love this. Remember we did a Haiku week once some time ago? And then maybe another? This is not my original haiku, but it's on a t-shirt I got Abigail and I love it to death:
Haikus are easy
but sometimes they don't make sense.
Refrigerator.

I didn't write this one, but it's one of my favorites.

Wait. I can do better.
Mmm, ravioli.
Your haiku made me hungry.
We will have chili.

I looked up the rules for haiku once, and there is actually a bunch of variation allowed, rather than the strict form taught in elementary school.
