02.24.2008 :: 55. I'm craving cheese

According to the poll that I put up regarding starting a virtual book club, Seen here on February 17th (click<------ to vote!), 157 of you chimed in. Wow! Now, to figure out the logistics would take a bit of math and if you know me at all, you know that math makes me itch so here's the breakdown (sans math)
9% of you said yes. A million times YES.
34% of you did not like to be so flipping cheery about it, but still, Yes.
4% of you declined. Busy people you.
8% said not know but maybe in the future. Perhaps they don't like the ideas of being my guinea pigs. Who could blame them, really.
27% of you are a fickle bunch. It depends what we read. I suppose if I say that we will read the B book of the Encyclopedia Brittanica some of you may or may not join in. That's okay. I understand this. If you are a reader of say, science fiction or star wars novels, or romance novels with their sinewy muscles and stuff, OR historical non fiction, than you will be disappointed. Unless I don't join in. I mean, you can read those things. Reading is good. Reading is fundamental.
and
17% of you are people after my own heart. Definitely maybe. That would be me if this were on your blog.
~~~
So, what does it all mean? I will do a virtual reading club. And I think I will host it over on my reading section, found here in all it's meagerness.
I'll have a poll for the title and a sign up over there soon. Now taking suggestions. With all of my Mermaid references going on the other day, Carole suggested that it meant that The Mermaid Chair should be the first book. And perhaps she is right!
Thoughts? Arguments? Constant head nodding? It's all good!
~~
And speaking of Nora. (I was but you did not know it. I got the idea of a virtual book club from her. We won't mention the begging and the pleading! ;)
hi nora!
You can blame her for this too:
You Belong in 1962
You are a free spirit with a huge heart. Love, peace, and happiness rule - oh, and drugs too.
Very interesting, considering I was 1 year old in 1962. And I'm sure by drugs they mean advil, right?
I am so in... I own the Mermaid's Chair and have not read it yet, also Time Traveler's Wife--- so either one!!! We can read and knit! Maybe then I won't eat quite so many cookies?!
The reason I said "definitely maybe" is that I don't really "read" much any more, but I do have audible.com and would love to listen along with a book club and some of the latest and greatest titles aren't on it yet. I think the Mermaid Chair is a great choice. I believe that there are No coincidences, we just don't yet know what they mean.
A book club? Oh fabulous, yep, I'm in. I'll be unemployed by Friday, frankly, I can't wait. I need something other than housework to fill my days.
Now I can't wait to find out what year I'm supposed to be in.
I just bought The Mermaid Chair! I guess I'm in perfect synch for the book club. At least for now.
As for what year I'm in? Well. I couldn't take the quiz because most of the questions don't have answer options that suit me. Does that mean I don't belong anywhere?
I got 1958!! That year my mom turned 3. What does that say about me??
Posted by: Heather on 02.25.2008 AT 09:12 AM
LOL. The drug of choice in those days was alcohol, m'dear. And cigarettes. Many a respectable lady was also a lush and a smoker, I'm afraid. Heh.
Well, I would be a charter member of your book club, you know I would -- but I know myself, and I *used* to be a reader, but I'm not now. And I just wouldn't do it. I've got too many irons in the fire already. But I'll be watching with interest. Actually....wait a minute....I could be talking myself into something here....I forgot that I now LISTEN to books. Duh. If it's available on CD, I could do it. Never mind. Delete this entire comment from your mind. I haven't had my morning cigarette yet. XOXO
Hooray for the Virtual Book Club! Let me know if I can help in any way.
No Advil in 1962...they mean aspirin. ;-)
Did someone mention cheese??
I have been thinking I should read one of Sue Monk Kidd's books, so I'm game if you are. Someone also mentioned The Time Traveler's Wife - OMG. What a fabulous book! Really, there are so many choices... I tend to avoid the Oprah uber-depressing stuff with hurt or dead children - I can't do those.
This is so fun - I told you you'd get a ton of responses!!
1953-year of my birth...at least one of the questions wasn't do you knit...
Posted by: Betsy on 02.25.2008 AT 05:49 AM
I have not read The Mermaid Chair, but I enjoyed the author's first book. Looks good to me.
As for the year -- I fell into a year when I was 34 years old!!
Posted by: Sue on 02.24.2008 AT 11:58 PM
Strange, mine was the year in which I was born, too. Not saying which one that is....
Posted by: Li_B on 02.24.2008 AT 08:33 PM
Apparently I'm stuck in 1955 . . . when, in real life, I was minus 11. Hmmmm.
I have to say that I've looked at the Mermaid's Chair and it hasn't appealed to me, but that's just me! I've heard good things about it, but, well . . . it probably is more interesting than the B volume of the encyclopedia. (Because, any guesses as to whether the Boykin Spaniel is in there? Of course not!)
sorry - obviously I meant 4 of my top 10 (guess who else can't do math) insert embarrassed look here!
Posted by: anna on 02.24.2008 AT 03:40 PM
3 of my top 10 must reads for your book club suggestion:
The Time Traveler's Wife
The Thirteenth Tale (actually I read this one after Norma suggested it and OMG am I so glad she did)
Atlas Shrugged
Secret Life Of Bees
Hahahaha, according to this, I belong in 1961 - 12 years before I would make an appearance. Oh well, I've always known I was an anachronism.
I've been meaning to pick up Mermaid's Chair. Assuming I can get it from the library, and that's the book you choose, I'd love to join the book club.
