03.08.2008 :: 67. Cheese curds and cheese monkeys, I KIDD you not!

Dear Vicki,
Wisconsin cheese curds
I bought Wisconsin Cheese Curds today at Trader Joe's. Now, will you tell this New England gal how does one eat a cheese curd? Is there a "way"? Is it a cracker thing? Does it stand alone? Must I microwave it so it will "squeak"? And I can't help but wonder, they really SQUEAK?
Cheesily yours,
Sandy, cheese curd-less no more!
~~
Have you eaten cheese curds? Tutorial anyone?
~~
Books
I bought The Mermaid Chair and am now ready to read along! Anyone going to read with me? I figure in about a month or so we can have a bit of a discussion? Do you plan to read it? or have you read it?
And how could I resist the other book? The Cheese Monkeys! (this was before I bought the cheese curds, perhaps foreshadowing my Trader Joe's shopping trip a bit) With a title like that, it certainly piqued my curiosity. I gave it the first page read test and brought it home. (I always read the first page of a book to see if I'm interested. Usually, it is spot on)
~~
I'm bitter as all get out about losing that hour tonight. Usually it's not until April so I feel a bit gypped.

How come I knew not of this post? I'm such a bad friend. Where was I? I was rather absent this weekend. I blame it on the ice storm and the need for a chiropractic adjustment. Heh.

I'm not sure I'd like the curds to squeak. My teeth start to ache just thinking about it!

Sadly, I've never had squeaky cheese curds (though I knew about them from working with a bunch of Wisconsinites).

I'm anxious to see what you think of Cheese Monkeys . . . I read it about a year ago. I also read The Mermaid Chair, but I don't remember anything about it.

Posted by: chris on 03.10.2008 AT 12:11 PM

Yes, I've read the book and I would like to read it again with others. Count me in.

Pop a curd in your mouth, place on you molars, bite down a couple times. Repeat.

It will squeak. no effort required.
I just asked my husband (NE native as well) and he has never had squeaky cheese. I can't even imagine, it seems so weird that he(and you) have not had this wonder I call squeaky cheese.

Oh! The Book Club! Right, I'm on it.

Cheese. Ewwwwww.

I am not a cheese eater, mostly because dairy and I don't get along well, but I'm so tempted to run out and get me some curds! How did you like them?

I read Mermaid Chair a while ago. I'll be interested in hearing what you think. I loved her first book so much, the Bee one.

Mmmmmm...now I can't wait for Farmer's Market to begin. We have a cheese guy there that brings curds that are made just before he heads to market. Yum, yum, yum.

You're reading the Mermaid Chair? Too cool... a friend of mine worked on the movie.

Google Poutine to see what should be done with cheese curds! Curds are also good chilled.

Ah cheese curds. As a sometimes Texan who paused 22 years in rural Wisconsin, I remember them well. Instructions? Open package and eat them one at a time. Out to dine? Order them beer battered and deep fried. Dip them into something tasty and regret for three days not waiting for them to cool a bit. Oh the burning, flesh peeling roof of mouth! Yum.

LOVE LOVE LOOOOVE Cheese Curds. They are full of squeaky goodness!

I just started reading Mermaid Chair a couple days ago. But I confess, I've never considered eating a cheese curd. Perhaps I should try it. And I know I have to read at least the first page of Cheese Monkeys.

Posted by: Chris on 03.09.2008 AT 10:07 AM

I just love to pop them one by one in my mouth and chew. I like mine just slightly chilled. Cheese Monkey's and Mermaids...hmmmm...what a great combo!

All the other Cheeseheads beat me to it, but I must chime in given my ancestral rights. Besides, I have actually visited cheese factories where curds are being made before the eyes. Fresh ones squeak, but I like Angie's method of consuming the day-olds.

This might not be such a bad day if I stop in at Trader Joe's!

I've read The Mermaid Chair, but I've never eaten cheese curds.

I do hate DST, though. Passionately.

mmmmmm, cheese curds. They're awfully yummy. And squeaky, yes.

I just got Mermaid Chair out of the library this week, it's going in my bag to be plane reading for my trip this week.

I've never had cheese curds but I have read The Mermaid Chair. How's that?

Posted by: Carole on 03.08.2008 AT 11:16 PM

I saw those cheese curds in Trader Joe's today and thought of Vicki too! Heh.

I didn't buy them though. I guess I will have to back so I can try them.

I usually eat cheese curds straight up--right out of the bag, at room temperature. Squeeky is good and very fresh. If they get a little old I may nuke them and eat them with mini kosher dills and some saltines. (No, I'm not going to check the BP. Why do you ask?) :D

Beer battered and deep fried with marinara! Yum! I am going to TJ's the first chance I get.

LOVE THE CURDS!!!
From a WI gal, we love them deep fried and dipped in ketchup...yum yum, but can also get them fresh daily at the grocery store and squeak they do. This variety you eat straight up, cracker optional;)As Vicki said room temp is best and eat them all in one sitting;)

I remember when I was a little girl and I used to go right to the cheese factory and get them right out of the vat...ahh...

Connie in Appleton, WI where it's still ass cold!!!!!

Our local cheese curds squeak when fresh. I've never tried microwaving them. And yes, they really do squeak. :)

Cheese curds? Now I have to try these (if I can ever find them)squeaky cheese sounds like too much fun to miss. Oops forgot about the book club.

I put The Mermaid Chair on hold at the library after you mentioned it before. I am in the process of reading it now. So far so good.

Posted by: Suzanne on 03.08.2008 AT 07:11 PM

my husband and i love to just EAT cheese curds (and yes, they do squeak...that's part of the fun). at the MN State Fair, the specialty is deep-fried cheese curds, which you then dip in marinara. yummy, yummy.

Posted by: danielle on 03.08.2008 AT 06:35 PM

Well, 'round here we buy curds as fresh and fresh can be -- they haven't even been refrigerated yet and that's when they're the squeekiest!

Oh, yes, My Sandy, they do indeed squeek.

I recently microwaved curds for the very first time -- some of the goat cheese ones that had been in the 'fridge for a while. Only for a VERY few seconds, though -- you do not want them warm (I don't think they actually melt, anyway) -- you want them only at room temp for the best flavor.

Mmmmmm. Enjoy!
