03.22.2008 :: 81. Wool is for the birds. Yeah, I said it!

See this wool?
Pretty!
It's for the birds!
No, really!
Wool for the birds
See? Would I lie to you?

Please, for the love of all that is good and holy, please do not visit that link unless you are ready to witness the ugliest, scariest looking vinyl dolls ever seen. Honestly. I'm sorry to them but they are scary.
Nesting wool for the birds
We'll see if my neighborhood birds have good taste in nest building materials! Really, the birds around here NEED wool in their nest it has been SO cold lately! Poor little things.
But look who doesn't mind the cold and mud:
TULIPS!
Grow little tulips, grow!
Fig has something to say about all this, of course:
Whatever!
Whatever!

What the hell are those dolls... dear god they scare the crap out of me. Nightmares tonight for certain.

I had some "nesting wool" from the same company. The birds loved to use it to make their nests. After a while, there was this huge fuzz ball of leftover "arms" of yarn in the net. Awesome. Hey, I can share some wool with the birds!

I found two nest a couple of summers ago and both were lined with a soft wooly fluff. They know how to build nice homes for their babes.

We put yarn out in the spring - a lesson from our neighbors, who are huge birders. Spring appears a long way off here, though...

My husband bought me a cage filled with nesting material for Christmas. I need to get it out in the yard, since the birds are surely in need of it right about now. I don't think it's wool, but I should check.

The Yarn Harlot has a great chapter in her book about creatures in the yard stealing her yarn. I am glad you have fiber designated for wildlife. (Oh and I have not yet read the post, but that is an awesome hat!)

You're lucky to have mud! My garden is still under 5 feet of snow.

When the weather gets warmer, I like to give Chappy his haircuts outside--not only does it make the clean-up easier, but it means all that soft fur is available for nests. (Hey, any bird that's bird-brained enough not to take advantage can just be cold, right?)

Not only that, nesting is a good use for leftover yarn, too.

I LOVE the idea of hanging out wool for the birds. Why didn't I think of that. I'm sending a link to this post to my sister who has no less than four feeding stations in her backyard. Well, five if you count that they throw out peanuts on the deck any time they see squirrels or blue jays!

Wool may not be such a great thing for Florida, maybe some snippets of cotton?!?!

I hate to be the one to quash a idea but putting wool out for bird nests is a really bad idea. Wool holds water and dampness really, really well. Think of a featherless baby bird with wet wool surrounding it. Not a nice picture. Tiny birds do not have the fortitude or internal heat to combat wet wool that humans do. I would not do it.

I totally need to round up some scrap fiber and yarn for our birds - we got 4 inches of snow yesterday!

Growing up we used to put dog hair in mesh bags, then in the fall my sister and I would look around for chickadee nests coated in yellow lab hair!

Hey, that's a great idea of what to do with extra lose wool.
"Here, birdy, birdy..."

Oh my goodness! My parents still live in Goffstown, and I went to high school there. I have to find out where they are, and get fiber from them!

You're such a good person. The birds will love you and Fig will learn to deal. ♥

Awwww, aren't you nice to put the wool out for the birds? I loved it when I used to groom Vincent and the little birds would come pick up his hair to line their nests. Sniff. I miss my Vincent. I am not clicking the link. I do not fancy ugly vinyl doll heads. :)
