04.08.2008 :: 98. It's not Wednesday, but I'm doing random anyway

Random 1:
inotherwords.jpg

Good breeding consists of concealing how much we think of ourselves and how little we think of the other person.

-- Mark Twain, Notebooks (1935)

How I love this quote, let me count the ways! Don't you just hate it when people go on and on about how freaking wonderful they are? You'd think if they were so wonderful, we'd come to that conclusion ourselves. They go on and on. And ON. I've always had a bit of trouble being a braggart. Tooting my own horn is a challenge. I build myself up in my mind! I'm a veritable QUEEN there. But in real life, I'd like to believe I live modestly. (Promise me that if you ever hear me saying how GREAT I AM (without my tongue firmly in cheek!) that you will bop me one. PROMISE!)
OH, how I know some people that I would like to tell them what I really think of them. But I don't. And I won't! (No, not YOU!) They are so annoying and taking up space with their non brains. It's a bit unsavory.
Random 2: (My! Random 1 went into a rant dinnit?) In our local paper today there was a police report of a fight at the Beverly Depot. Apparently, 2 people gave each other a dirty look on the train and when they got off the train a fight broke out. About a dirty look. That must have been some dirty look huh? Good thing I have not been beat up when I've given those! (see random 1)
Random 3:
Shopping bags from Whole foods
Shopping bag alternative, an addition to the conversation at Norma's. I love these bags from Whole Foods. $1.00 each. When you use them there, you get 10 cents off your order. I know, 10 cents, schmen schments. But you can see that they may just pay for themselves after a time and let's not mention being Green is the thing to do. It's not easy being green, as Kermit says. The hardest part? Not the recycling or the reducing. It's the remembering the flipping bags. You must bring them INTO the store for them to do any good. It's a challenge. Maybe we should make a bloggers challenge (we love those, don't we?) (we'd need a button) You know, use no plastic or paper bags for 2 months (Or whatever). I'm up for it. Green for an Eon type of thing. Green is not Mean. Um...Bag it...Green bagging (kind of like brown bagging).
Random 4:
Random gnome
Random 5: There has been a water main down my street that has been bubbling, wasting water since last week. After shutting the water off to the neighborhood for one whole evening, 11 pm to 5 am to no avail there are trucks every where and our one way street is closed off today. Our water will be shut tonight again for that same time frame. The last time, I had water dreams all night long because I knew I had to get up a bit early to run the water until it cleared up. Water. All. Night. Long. I suppose tonight too.
See you in the pool!
Random 5: this was quite the eclectic random post, was it not?

First, I am all for the Green Bagging challenge -- I do pretty good in taking reusable bags with me, but a challenge would help me do it ALL the time.

Second, it is so unfortunate that the times we live are becoming more violent. Several months ago a young man in my city was shot to death by a passenger in another car who decided this young man "looked at him wrong" when the two vehicles were next to each other at a stoplight.

Third, I love the Mark Twain quote and I'm putting the button on my site!

It's so nice to know I'm not the only one who has those bags from Whole Foods, but who also forgets them at home. I do recycle my paper bags for recycling newspapers, paper, cans and plastic.

I love your random posts, Sandy. They make me smile.

I whole-heartedly agree with your statement about trying to remember to take the bags to the store. I have a half-dozen of those bags at home but I never remember them as I'm leaving the house. I have a friend who even leaves hers in the trunk of her car, but she never remembers hers either.

Not use plastic bags for months? What do I put the "used" kitty litter in then?

Posted by: Karen on 04.09.2008 AT 11:49 AM

It took me a few trips back to the car to get the bags to remember then each time. I keep them on the front seat of my car so they are always at the ready. Let's do the button thing!
Love the quote.

Hee, you are so right about the reusable bags. I am terrible, I kept mine in the trunk for the longest time thinking, "They are in the car, I will remember them." yeah right, I have to put them on the passenger seat floor. sheesh

My daily dose of Sandy always makes me smile - I'm going to put that Twain quote on my office door at work. Perfect!! Then the wonderful people will have something to look at when I shut it in their faces.

I like the apple bag, too. We do have Whole Paycheck. Going there now.

I have the bags that fold up and snap into a lil square. I found that if I hang them on the front door handle (inside of course) as soon as I've emptied them then I see them when I walk out the door and remember to put them in the car. I'm very good at remembering them at the grocery store now. What I'm trying to teach myself is to bring them into all the *other* stores I go to. I've also made my own mesh veggie bags out of that netting stuff from the fabric store, very cheap and also very light. Those don't work for stuff that gets wilty though, like lettuce. I need to think of something I can use for that... muslin would be cheap but you can't see through it and that would drive the cashier nuts.

Countless times I've had to walk back to the car to retrieve those exact bags. Cursing my lameness the entire way there and back.

Too right! I always avoid people who believe their PR. You are fabulous, btw. Don't make me come over there with my icky skin and weirdness because I will and it won't be pretty!

I love the bag challenge, btw. We need a button! I wish I had a Whole Foods because I love that apple bag. ♥

Oh, P.S., I forgot to ask if you wet the bed with all that dreaming about water mains and whatnot?

Posted by: Norma on 04.08.2008 AT 08:03 PM

That IS a good quote, even though I know you mean ME. XOXO

So. Bags. It's a big topic. I want a button. I'm up for it!

Mark Twain was a wise man. And I like this quote from the wise Sandy;

"You'd think if they were so wonderful, we'd come to that conclusion ourselves."

So true. Actions speak louder than words; and all the pretty words and pretty lighting and pretty clothes won't change that simple truth.

:)

I agree, taking the bags into the store is the hardest part. We have bags in each of our cars. After a couple of times of walking into the store, having a "DOH" moment, and then walking back to the car to get the bags, we now take the bags into the store with us from the get go.

Also, we take the bags back out to the car as soon as we're done unpacking the groceries--otherwise they'd be on the kitchen counter while we were in the store. Another "DOH" moment! lol

Hmmm, I know some people who should read this post. Although, they wouldn't think it meant them anyway. Ooops, you didn't mean me, did you? I'd better watch it.

Great Twain quote. Ain't it the truth?
