05.23.2008 :: 142. I can't drive 55~
I've been thinking of Norma trying to save gas by driving 55 and how hard that has become in our fast world. (The US world, anyway and specifically the Northeast US but perhaps in your corner too?). With gas prices soaring through the roof, we are all thinking how saving pennies can quickly turn into many dollars.
I remember seeing a video that I wanted to revisit.
CLICK FOR MOVIE <-------
A fascinating look at driving 55 mph and it's impact on a highway and it's drivers. Now? I picture Norma holding up irate Vermont drivers.
The video is almost 5 minutes long but be sure to watch it to the end. The end is where it gets good.
If only I could ride a bike, I could commit to Claudia's bike riding errand running. (I can't, ride a bike. And have no desire to at this point in my life)
Are you driving 55?

Ooooh. I like Margene's idea. Could you scooter?

I have a certified Lead Foot, so instead of trying to keep my speed down, I'm going to start riding the dreaded bus. Yep. Had my parking card turned off the other day, and bought a bus pass.
This will be an adventure.

I'm thinking a Vespa is a good way to go.

Here in the Midwest, I drive 60 (with cruise control on) when I use the Interstate highways. Others pass me all the time but I'm going the legal limit for that particular highway so I ignore them. We have one Interstate that they restriped from four lanes to five because in their infinite wisdom the highway department shut down a major highway for remodeling. The lanes on the restriped highway are so narrow that it feels risky to even do the posted 55.

i've been driving 65-70 on the pike lately and people get annoyed at me. even when i'm in the slow lane and they have room to safely pass me. which tells me that gas is still not expensive enough. that was a cool movie.

Well, I can't watch the movie, so I don't know what it was about, but I can't remember the last time I drove 55 on the highway. Although, all of them around here have 65 for the speed limit, and doing THAT is taking your life in your hands (grin). Really, though, I'm seldom on highways--mostly I'm on the same few roads, tooling around my town from home to work to home to work.... It's only about 4 miles from here to there but big hills in both directions and really, it's not remotely feasible to ride my bike. Even if it hadn't been parked in exactly the same place in the garage for about 15 years so that there's no way I would trust the tires at this point anyway (grin).
But, okay, really? You can't ride a bike? (I'm not judging you, you understand, just dumbfounded you got through childhood without learning. Although, if it makes you feel any better, I didn't learn to swim until I was 30.)

Having said that, if I have to drive 55, I might slit my wrists. Then again, as Claudia says, if in the next few years I have to be back on my bike or a horse in order to get anywhere because we have killed the world....55 won't seem so bad. Grumble.

THAT WAS ONE FANTASTIC MOVIE, and a really AMAZING project and experiment by these kids. Wow! I'm going to post it next week.

Wow, that was a great movie! I agree that if they are going to have 55 be the standard than they should enforce it. I try to drive 55 here and people just get so flustered with me. I am thinking seriously about the bike, but hubby needs to get me a different seat for mine because it isn't too comfy.

Well, 60 was the best I could do between Lincoln and Cambridge yesterday morning, having dropped off my nephew's carpool. It's quite easy to go between 70 and 80 on Route 2 otherwise. That's my most frequent high-speed route (only a few times a week), and I wonder if I'll see a difference in my mileage.

HAHHA! I loved Andy at the end. :D Thanks!
Have a fun and safe Memorial Day

I will admit to just trying to keep it at 65 or under on my way to MA sheep and wool today. I can keep it slow on the back roads but the highway, I have to pay more attention. I go the speed limit on the way to and from work every day on a side street(30 mph and two different streets) and I get passed.
After paying $4.12 Friday for gas, I will be trying harder and traveling less.
