08.28.2008 :: 239. Winners and a Pickle and a bit of this and that
Here is what's what today:
~I started knitting another dragon scale scarf for a coworker who bought herself the cashmere. The color is called "granny smith" and that pretty much sums it up. In other walks of life it might have been called lime green. Either way, the color is not one of my best and even while knitting it, my color clashes with it's color. One of us has to go.
~It's amazing how much knitting one can get done while waiting in hospitals while people have their cancer appointments
~Winners! I have winners!
The yarn winner is Life's a Stitch, Li! She will get a yarny prize. Have I ever told you how much I love Li? She's my best West Coast friend. I love her to pieces. And now I get to send her some yarn. I'm the lucky one. (Oh, and it bears saying again, please go and check out Li's scarf pattern. It's a great pattern and she will give it out for free for the polite asking. Tell her I sent you!)
And.
The winner of the Philosophy gift set? Margene! Have I told you how much I love Margene? She my best Utah friend. I love her. To pieces. And now I am sharing my favorite obsession with her, my Philosophy. Who better to share Philosophy with anyway?
Again. How lucky am I? (I don't think Margene has anything free to give away, but you could try to beg something off of her anyway if you want. Tell her I sent you!)
~haha~
~While in the hospital waiting area today, knitting my little heart out with granny smith yarn that clashed horribly with my skin color, I glanced up at the television and the closed captioning and read
and I quote
"which is typ pickle for a 14 year old girl"
I pondered for a minute or so, "what is a typ pickle?". Then it dawned on me, of course it's "typical". I tell this story as part of the ongoing CART (which I believe stands for Captions Are Really Typ (Pickle) series that is so wonderful over at Norma's. (Have I told you how I love Norma?) (Okay, I'll stop)
~ It occurs to me, during the closing night of the Democratic National Convention which also coincides with the 45th anniversary of Martin Luther King's I have a Dream speech, that in order for our country (Or our world for that matter) to truly move into a post racial society, it is imperative that we stop referring to people like Barack Obama as a BLACK man. No one refers to John McCain as a WHITE man. A small adjective that should not have to be used. We will only be non racial when we can stop referring to race. Will it happen? I can only hope.
So Typ Pickle, isn't it?

Hey, I'm a captioner! Although I was not the person writing typ pickle! I don't make that mistake :)
I'm heading over to Norma's block to check out this series!

Yeah, I mean, his mom is white and all... It seems that if you are anything but visibly white and a man, folks have to label you, as SOMEthing... do you think it's because they think you less a person? My favorites are those folks that are visibly white but are really mostly lots of other things, and the small minded set doesn't notice.

I think you make an excellent point about race. I don't think of Obama is a black man, I think of him as our next president! Woot!

What did I hear on the radio tonight? No one refers to Geroge Bush as a #$@*&. Or maybe they do. I can say that safely all the way up here in Canada land.
Thank you, thank you, Sandy. Now that you've outed our relationship I hope it doesn't cause too many issues with the rest of the West Coast ;-)

Lucky me! You are one amazing lady, Sandy, truly a wonderful friend.
How lucky are we see Obama be nominated today, 45 years after MLKs speech? Inspiring, very inspiring.
I think of Norma every time I see CART on TV. ;-)

So... Li's your best West Coast friend, huh? Suddenly, I am feeling very unloved.
Oh, and I refer to John McCain as an old white man almost daily. I refer him as other things, too, but I don't want to use that kind of language in your blog.

Like Melissa, I'm scratching my head how the person could have written steno in a way that would have translated as "typ pickle." It's a hoot and illustrates how we all think differently. Me, the way I write it, if it were not defined properly in the steno dictionary (and why wouldn't it be, heh?) it would come out "tip cal.") Which, really, I wonder if it is any better a mistake than "typ pickle." Hee.
