10.23.2008 :: 69. Veggies rock

Every year at Rhinebeck, traveling from hotel to fairgrounds, I pass a charming little stand announcing that it has FRESH DUG POTATOES. Every year, I say I'm going to stop there. And then on Sunday, I check out of the hotel, travel to the fairgrounds for the rest of the day and proceed home without stopping because I don't go by the potato stand on the way to the Taconic State parkway, which is for the record, one of the most beautifully scenic rides I have ever seen.
This year, I told my Fair Buds that I will be stopping this year. And we did.
I bought 10 pounds of fresh dug potatoes and some Indian Corn which is now on my front door from that Hick's Boy's no relation to Hobson Applicance Vegetable stand.
I have not yet eaten one of those potatoes but I have a beef stew planned for them to be one of the flavor stars this weekend. It is definitely stew weather!

How were they?!
I love home-grown taters. You have to grown them next year, my Sandy. xo

I don't remember seeing fresh dug potatoes. My loss.

I second the opinion that you should grow your own. I have a whole bed dedicated to potatoes and nothing beats them. You can seriously grow them in a black garbage bag anywhere you have space. Totally worth it. I get my seed potatoes from Wood Prairie Farm in Maine (mail order).

I grew potatoes this year in a bag in my front yard. My neighbors all laughed but everyone gathered around when it was time to dig them out. They are mega easy, Sandy. You should give it a go next year. I grew the Green Mtn variety (my Grandfather's fave) in a potato bag from Gardener's Supply. Nothing like a fresh potato.

I don't think I've seen that sign! But good for you for stopping. I bet they'll be great baked, too.

How very wonderful! I didn't even see the sign, but I'm so glad you stopped. The Taconic was amazingly beautiful to this Westerner!

Mmmmm, fresh-dug potatoes. I third (or whatever) that you should grow your own! They are indeed very easy. And sooooo delicious. Totally worth it.
And mmmmm, it's perfect beef stew weather. I bought a local flank steak yesterday. Perhaps it will become stew.
