11.03.2008 :: 58. Twas the night before the election and all through the house of representatives not a creature was stirring (how I wish I had the energy to write up the rest of that poem. It would be a scream, don't you think?)

I couldn't stand the fact that we were pumpkinless this Halloween. That is the first time. I had no excuse except that I put it off for so long that there were none left. But there inside the store on November 1st was a display of sugar pumpkins. No doubt trying to Martha me into making homemade pumpkin puree for the pies. When a couple of rows away in that supermarket is perfectly good canned pumpkin puree. No thank you, Martha. You can take your guilt.
I did however buy a small Bert shaped one that I thought was adorable because pumpkin decorations are also for Thanksgiving.
And for sitting in the window with Fig.

What was it about this year - we were pumpkinless too and I felt quite guilty. If you have a carving party next year, please keep me in mind!
I'm with you, Sandy. I buy the cans of pumpkin too!

Norma's right, you know. (But, then again, Norma's always right...) You should try it!
If Fig ever lets you have the pumpkin back, that is.

I have to speak up in defense of homemade pumpkin pie. It is indescribably better than pies made with the canned stuff. Martha complicates it too much, though with the pumpkin prep. I put the sugar pumpkin in the oven whole. Bake until you can stick a fork in it and it's soft. Scoop out the middle seedy bits and toss. Scoop out the pumpkin and put in bowl. Stir with 1 cup cream, 1 cup sugar, 1 or 2 eggs, assorted pumpkin -like spices in small amounts, say, 1/4 teaspoon of each of cinnamon, nutmeg, mace, 1/8 of cloves. Bake in pie shell until no longer jiggly. Fabulous!

Sannnnnn, you'd LOVE your home-made REALLY HOMEMADE pumpkin pie. You know you would. You gotta try it, at least. It's really worth it.

Awww! We were jack-o-lanternless for the first time as well! I vow to never let it happen again, I think everyone was disappointed. Maybe next year we can have a carving party.

That might have been a good one to get going in the comments, but, alas, it's too late. Fig seems happy with her new friend.
