11.24.2008 :: 37. Monday talk about Thursday
So, Thanksgiving. A day to be thankful. A day of turkey. To stuff and be stuffed.
This year our Thanksgiving day is taking an interesting turn. Bethany has to work. The EMT's of the world are keeping us safe, rushing to aid us when we need them. Holiday or not. Leaving me feeling a bit pouty (pouting seems to be a theme in the blogs today) about having Thanksgiving without her. I know that someday they will move out and have families of their own to thanksgive with but for now, they are at MY table.
I offered 2 options to the rest of my family.
1. We could go to Andy's sister's for a wonderful traditional Thanksgiving
or
2. We could all stay home (except for Bethany of course who will be working) and have an alternative T-Day. Which will include all or some of the following activities:
resting
knitting
napping
watching football
watching movies
knitting
going TO the movies
making pizzas
OR
ordering Chinese food for the ultimate anti T-day symbol
And then having our traditional Thanksgiving on Friday when all of us can be there.
All have opted for plan B. I couldn't be more happy. The more we think about sitting around having anti T-day the more we love the idea.
So, that's what I am doing on Thanksgiving and the day after. How about you?
(I do realize that it's not Thanksgiving around the whole world. If you do not celebrate, surely you can pause a moment that day to BE thankful.)
(Or order Chinese)

Good for you for making the best of things. I would be thrilled if there was chinese in my Thursday. As it is, I will be knitting under my rock in my cave.

Let's see...on Thursday I'm going to my sister-in-law's mother's house (husband's brother's wife's mother) to be given grief about the fact that I'm a vegetarian. On Friday, I'm holing up with some friends and we're pretending to be other people for about eight hours. (Role playing - I get to take out the frustrations of Thursday by pretending to beat up on monsters. Excellent.) I think I prefer YOUR Thanksgiving plans. :)

My youngest and his girlfriend won't get to our house until sometime on Friday, so we are doing our T-day on Saturday. I figure it's not the date, it's the whole idea of being together that is more important, and so we are going with the flow (we've hit the point where there are two families to be with and doing the whole thing in this direction made more sense from a travel standpoint...flexibility is my catchphrase).

I'll be right there with Bethany--working at "saving lives" for the holiday! I'll cook a turkey breast before I go in--the sandwiches are the best part. Enjoy your relaxful holiday and don't forget to blog!

We'll go for a long walk in the morning which is a celebration of thanks all its own. Last year on Thanksgiving, DH was recovering from surgery #3 and could barely get out of bed let alone walk a block.
Then we'll come home, watch a little football and I'll cook. It'll be just the two of us and I'm good with that. More leftovers for me!

You have a smart family and you were smart to think of such a great alternative. My sister is coming and cooking dinner for us, so I'm going to knit...much to her chagrin.

It sounds like the perfect compromise. Hope it works out just the way you want it to!

We're having our family thanksgiving on Wednesday night because one family member has to work Thursday morning and another one has to work Thursday afternoon/evening. Two other family members work in retail so the rest of the weekend wasn't available. But we can all get together on Wednesday evening so that's what we're doing.

That's what I like about Cdn Thanksgiving - it's a three day weekend and you get to pick which day you want to have the dinner. We usually go with the Saturday so Blogless Marha and family can come up from Seattle.

I'll wave to you as we drive by (sort of) on our way to NH on Wednesday. Hoping to get out of here early enough to miss the traffic in Hartford.

We are doing the same thing we do every year; driving to CT to my parents for the annual cramming of WAY too many people into their little tiny house. It's my favorite holiday of the year!
As a bonus, my dad is taking my daughter down early (tomorrow afternoon), so we get a couple of kid free days, which is delightful.
Friday, I am working working working. My company is a little stingy with the holidays.

For the last couple of years, we've been going to my husband's grandparents for the tradition family gathering.
For years and years before that, I cooked the whole feast and had people over.
While I don't miss all the work, I do miss having a fridge full of leftovers.
It's just awful when it's Thanksgiving night, and there's nothing to make a turkey sandwich out of...

You know, we always have Chinese on Christmas day. That sounds like a great plan!
