11.28.2008 :: 33. I hope it's not dry!

our thanksgiving bird
Last year my Mom gave me my Grandmother's turkey roasting pan. This is the second time that I am surprised at how much quicker turkeys cook in that pan. I hope I remember that for next year! Falling off the bone or not, this guy looks yummy. He's sitting right now waiting for the rest of the meal to catch up. Not ketchup, please.
This is the day that I have missed my father in law, Bob the most. I feel his presence around me as I cook what was his favorite meal of the year.
As I was puttering around, I spied this little guy outside the kitchen window:

Cardinal watching me in the kitchen
Bob's favorite bird was the cardinal.
Hi Bob!

My grandmother loved cardinals, as well. When my little brother was a kid, he always gave her a kiss every time they saw one. When she died 2 years ago, at the age of 99, he brought a picture of a cardinal to be buried with her. Still makes me tear up...

I have that same pan... with the lid. I was worried this year because I used a "recipe", here, http://www.marthastewart.com/recipe/perfect-roast-turkey (so I could cook a stuffed 20# bird in 4 hours not 6+), and it calls for a shallow pan. But the old fashioned one did fine. I put a rack under the bird... did you? It seems to help. And this year I splurged (all the thanksgiving meal accessories were right there when you walked into the supermarked) on an instant read thermometer and a silicone basting brush... they were really helpful, better than the std meat thermometer and a basting bulb. Glad Bob said hello!

I love Cardinals. Sadly though, I've never seen one in real life. We don't have any out here in CA. Lots of Blue Jays though. That turkey looks totally delish! I'll bet Fig wasn't too far out of that picture!

Does your pan have a cover? I love my covered roasters. They really do cook it way faster, and keep it moist, too. Yum. I bet it was delicious. And hello, cardinal! We don't have as many cardinals as I'd like around here.

I love when we get signs like that. I would have said Hi, Bob, too.
I'm cooking a turkey today. Yippee!

Well, weird...my turkey legs fell off during cooking and when I spoke to my DD, she said hers did too...it was soooooo good tho!
Cardinals are such a special treat in the late fall and winter, aren't they?

Yum. I'll bet it was delicious!

My mom loved cardinals. She always thought they were special, and now when I see one I always think it's a good sign.

I love cardinals and we don't have them in the West...sadly.

That is one delicious looking turkey. I'll bet Fig thinks so too.

Cardinals were my dad's favourite too... perhaps that's your father-in-law's way of joining you today :)

My great uncle Jimmy (who we called Uncle Inch because he was short and there was a cartoon Uncle Inch when we were little) would always mix all his food in a giant heap on his plate and cover it with ketchup. We were just saying yesterday that all that was missing from the Thanksgiving table was wacky uncle Jimmy.
