12.05.2008 :: 26. Did I ever tell you how much I loved John Denver?

Fig had his appointment today and it was as dismal as I expected. His kidneys are on their way out. His levels are all so high that the machine could not read them. One just has to look at Fig to know that something was not working right. But the vet and I had a long talk about quality of life and how we would know the "right" time for Fig. He got a subQ treatment and was NOT happy. He was a feisty little Fig today, I tell ya. He usually sits there and takes it all. Not today. He was meowing at them and standing up on his hind legs and swatting at them. He was one pissed off kitty.
All of that news I expected. The news that upset me (and the Vet) the most was the fact that he now weighs 5.9 pounds. In May he weighed 10.9 pounds. At his heftiest, he clocked in at almost 14. Poor buddy.
When we got home, I gave him his Christmas present, a new scratching post. (the cardboard kind with the catnip. He loves those and gets one very year) I realized that if he did not make it to Christmas, it would kill me to know that he did not get his new post.
That made him a happy cat. A happy, scrawny cat.
It's the weak back legs that concern me the most. Muscle loss, and the toxins in his body are causing him to have some trouble getting around. I'll gladly carry him around for a while.
~~~
With all of that gloom, surely you could use some cheer, right?
I am sorry to hear Fig is not well. At first when I was looking at his pictures I thought he was looking like a kitten again. He'll be happy with his early Christmas present. I'd do the same thing.
I had friends that took their dog out for ice cream after similar news, on their way back to the vet.
I'm so sorry about Fig. I'm thinking of you this holiday season - it's been tough for you and your family. LOVE LOVE LOVE!
(And JD? Well, I watched some PBS show on him while I was early pregnant and wept through the whole show. Then, when my baby was born, I listened to JD for like two weeks straight and couldn't stop crying. Now there's a connection that I'll never forget.)
Oh, Sandy, I am so sorry to hear of Fig's illness. We went through exactly the same thing with our Miles. He was a monster big boy and wasted away to nothing. But your vet sounds great, to tell you that you will know when the time is right. Ours wanted to have a consultation after we knew that it was truly time, and maybe past time...and we had to argue with her receptionist. It was very painful after we'd already made a painful decision. I am thinking of you and sending hugs to you and Fig (you might actually be the one who needs them more.)
Oh no! How awful. I'm so sorry to hear this news. I know he'll enjoy the time he has left, especially with that scratching post. Have courage and give him a cuddle from me.
Oh Sandy, I am so sorry to hear about Fig's health problems. My 15 year old cat has lost about 5 lbs this year and the vet is trying to figure out why.
I love the Fig pictures and will keep you and your family and Fig in my thoughts. He is such a handsome boy.
Your sad post breaks my heart. I know exactly how you feel. I'm sure you will decide when the time has come, but my own experience has shown me that it is good not to wait too long. When I've delayed longer than I should have, I've always regretted it.
Sandy, I'm so, so sorry for you and Fig. I know though that he's had a wonderful life with you, and really, what more could a cat ask for? And now a new scratching post? Life right now is still good for the Figster and that's all that matters. Right now.
I'm so sorry about poor Fig. You speak very lovingly of him - he must be a wonderful kitty. I lost my Flint a couple of years ago to the same thing. It was horribly sad to see my 16 lb cat wasting away to nothing. His hind legs got to be so bad that I had to carry him up and down the stairs. We finally had to make the decision to let him go. It just wasn't fair to let him suffer just because I wanted him to stay. I was lucky to have him for 16 yrs - he was a wonderful furry friend and I miss him very much. Good luck to you and Fig.
Hugs to you and your dear Fig. Isn't it amazing how such tiny creatures can fill up our hearts...
Love for Fig, the Blogosphere's Best Spokes-Kitty.
I'm so sorry to hear this Sandy. I know it's not easy when your pet is sick... especially when that pet is really a family member.
xoxoxo for the Sandy-family too.
Sending you lots of warm (temperature and emotional) thoughts from Florida. Wish I knew you and could come sit with you and watch Fig with his scratching post. He's a beautiful and well-loved cat who is having the best last days he can have.
The music clips are a great balance to the sadness.
Poor kitty. I'm sorry, Sandy.
I was a huge John Denver freak back in the day. I think he was my first crush.
I'm so sorry about Fig. You are so lucky to have had each other all these years. You are both in my thoughts.
I'm so sorry about Fig. It's soooo hard to see an animal wasting away. Especially a beloved member of the family. But they are so worth having. Oh and I love JD too.
Wow, look at all these posts! Clearly Fig is a dearly loved little fellow by many people. I'm so sorry for what you are going through and I'm just glad that you have this time to spoil him rotten and gives him lots and lots of cuddles. I do volunteer work for my local animal shelter and I can promise you that many many cats would give anything to have had the wonderful, caring, nurturing life that he has. You have given Fig a wonderful gift in caring for him as you have and you continue to do so as you look out for his quality of life. Please take comfort in that.
I think you need the hugs more than Fig does. I love ya, my Sandy. XOXO
God. I'm so sorry, Sandy. I know too well how much that hurts. There's just never the right thing to say at a time like this. I'll be thinking about you.
Posted by: Jean on 12.05.2008 AT 11:29 PM
Yes, the days are short for Fig. He has been a fine cat. I'm so glad he got his catnip today. The best you can do is give him a great send-off.
(That was a bit disjointed, but it brings back memories of cats I have loved and said farewell to.)
I have a soft spot in my heart for John Denver. My uncle was an admirer, and I remember him with a guitar and the same kind of John Denver haircut in the '70s playing and singing his songs.
Posted by: Nancy on 12.05.2008 AT 10:48 PM
Oh, honey, I'm so sorry. Enjoy him as long as you have him with you.
Posted by: Cookie on 12.05.2008 AT 10:32 PM
Poor little Fig. Skritch his head for me
Posted by: Paula on 12.05.2008 AT 10:07 PM
Oh, Sandy. That's all I can say.
Posted by: Carole on 12.05.2008 AT 10:07 PM
Sorry to hear about Fig's decline. I'm sure a wee bit of SubQ hydration helped despite his failing kidneys. My thoughts are with you both.
Posted by: Manise on 12.05.2008 AT 09:48 PM
Poor, sweet fig. Give him an ear scritch from me.
Posted by: Ruth on 12.05.2008 AT 09:38 PM
Poor Fig, we're all sending good thoughts his way.
Do you know I always find it hard to believe that John Denver is gone. And I remember this Muppets segment when it first aired. I always got a kick out of the old guys.
Posted by: Diane T on 12.05.2008 AT 09:31 PM
Aw, I'm so sorry to read about Fig. Give him a little skritch from me and Gizmo.
